INTERIOR DESIGN & DECOR TRENDS FOR 2024

I thought I would do a simple list of what we will be seeing this year.

A return to the Art Deco look with rounded shapes, curvy pieces,                         details and sculptural moulding, saturated colour in some                                    cases, i.e. accessories

Earth tones, natural looking spaces, clay pottery, organic materials,                      warmer

Clean look.  Using a stacked tile design rather than a brick pattern

Deep colours, bold, jewell especially for accessories. Blue is still                            very popular especially Cobalt blue

Overstuffed and comfortable upholstered furniture.  Still many toss                       cushions and many with patterns

Patterns in fabric, wallpaper, tiles, carpet

We will still see neutral hues in the big ticket items like sofas and                          carpet.  The fun comes with the accessories.

Colourful Portuguese pottery will be seen more

    Wood ceilings

Biophilia which is the human connection to nature.  We are drawn to                  living  things especially plants. Plants are known to be beneficial to our                 mental health and our inside environment

Open plan living is losing it's appeal and we want individual spaces

The all white kitchen is not as popular these days.  We want to                             see more colour

    Texture everywhere.  Boucle, wood

POWDER ROOMS in 2023

Powder rooms are an opportunity to have a little more fun and step out of your comfort zone. This can be the little jewel box of the home, a perfect space to use  your creativity. Tile can be installed on the walls of a bathroom in place of paint or wallpaper. I worked on a powder room with a client and we put tile on the wall  behind the sink.  It looks beautiful.  Textured, decorative tile is likely to gain popularity in 2023. The shapes add decorative interest, dimension and artistry to a space, particularly for hand-crafted or highly detailed tiles.

Darker colours are coming back. You'll notice richer, warmer wood tones paired with dark, more saturated finishes. Lots of textures will be showing up in all ways. Saturated colour is really happening now. I love to do a super moody powder room and paint the trim, ceiling, and wall all one color. A deep jewel-tone green or blue is stunning for this. Wallpaper in a bold, fun pattern or wainscoting throughout the room work well too. In my last home I painted my powder room black.  It was very dramatic.

Clients are typically more willing to go darker and stronger in a powder room space and take chances with wall colours. We don't spend much time in a powder room so it is easy to accept something a little more daring.

The modern powder room for 2023 is packed with glamour.  We are seeing powder rooms loaded with extra thick floating countertops and fluted walls in gorgeous marble accented by anything from intensely patterned wallpaper to super subtle grasscloths, and always a dose of statement lighting.

Additionally, adding some nice art really raises the bar and of course lighting which I will touch on in a future post. You will notice that the mirrors and lighting are like jewellery in the room.

Here are some gorgeous powder rooms -

What's happening in 2023 Interior Design

2023 Design & Decor Trends

There are so many that I have selected some of what is displayed in the marketplace.

The recent Las Vegas furniture show covers the most up to date in furniture, home decor and gifts.  A lot of what is showcased becomes our trends.

A great deal of soft furnishings were exhibited in white while using performance fabrics, which makes them easy to clean.  This is an option at many retailers that offer custom pieces because it shows the structure without being distracted by different colours or patterns.

There is a lot of texture in upholstery and case goods eg reeded furniture.  Boucle is back and seen everywhere. It is a very durable textile.

Rattan is popular again. We see round and curvy shapes. Opposite to this we will see boxy, cubes and geometric.  Mixing  curves & cubes can add some interest when done with thought.

The mid-century modern is still seen.

As popular as neutrals are, this year we are going for colour.  We will continue to keep large & expensive pieces neutral, but inject colour with cushions, throw, art and accessories.

As written in previous posts we are incorporating texture in many ways such as textiles, accessories, wood, natural stone, metal, rattan, concrete, & wall coverings.  As I may have mentioned in earlier posts, wallpaper has come a long way from the 80's.  It is much easier to apply and definitely much easier to remove with no damage to your walls.

Natural materials, rugged and cozy, natural stone fireplaces, wood beams, organic, comfortable furnishings are showing up.

There are many design styles which we already know - art deco, coastal, arts & crafts, industrial as well as more recent styles such as Modern rustic, modern farmhouse.  There are so many styles used in decor these days, there is something for everyone.

Built in pieces are gaining more popularity for storage and display,  This not a new idea but really helps when you are dealing with a small space.  They keep clutter down and provide a streamlined focal point.

Connections to the outdoors and vice versa,  with large windows, & sliding glass doors thus offering more light which we all crave.

Various seating arrangements that work for intimate conversations as well as large parties,  Use a combination of seating pieces sofas, chairs, benches, ottomans

Large area rugs that anchor the furnishings, and not skimpy which doesn't do anything for the space.  Sustainability is even more important than ever with long lasting products, water saving features, appliances,  windows that are environmentally friendly.  The list could go on.  I have added a few photos showing  some of the design trends mentioned.

A few upcoming trends

1. Brown Furniture is Back
Some might argue that brown furniture never went away, but I disagree.  There was certainly a period of time where designers eschewed traditional brown furniture forms for lighter finishes, and most antique dealers will tell you that the market for early English and American antiques grew soft.  That time has past.
2. Lucite, Glass and Brass
Tempering all that dark wood were pieces light as air.  Lucite was everywhere and was used most effectively when accented in brass. Bernhardt’s modern four poster bed was a showstopper.
3. Handcrafted Materials
From small markers to large corporations, I saw a resurgent interest in featuring handcrafted materials.  Tent London was filled with examples, including this very handsome lighting in hand tooled leather.
4. Nature as Muse
Lamps with feather shades and bases crafted to mimic birds legs?
5. Wallpaper As Art
My spin around design events this fall also suggests that wallpaper might be the only art you ever need.  It certainly is not going away, and the days of considering a wallpapered room as too “granny” are long gone.
At Tent London, U.K. designer Deborah Bowness introduced a highly colorful paper that called to mind a super-sized artist palette.   It would make a fine focal point.

Trends - Whats in and What out

Yesterday I attended a Designer event at Brentwood and the guest speaker was Shai DeLuca-Tamasi, a regular design expert on Cityline.  He spoke about some of the trends that are "in" and those that are "Out".

What's In......

One of the biggest things we are seeing and have seen for a little time now, is the use of mixed metals.  There is no matchy matchy of all one metal and this givves greater interest in the space.  We see  it in jewellery and as we know what is on the runway comes to home decor.

Mixing Black with Metals gives a dramatic and rich look

Our look is now a more liveable, relaxed and less staged look which is refreshing and welcoming.   We are less formal in our lives and now in the way we design and decorate our homes.

Area rugs that are painterly in style which is like a Monet painting.  There is an inconsistent pattern which doesn't show dirt as much as other designs.  This is great for families with young children.

Remember the 70's - well smoky glass is back.  Not sure if I like this trend.  I will let it grow on me

The colour Indigo which is a mix of black and navy is being seen and gives a moody look that can be quite elegant and very french.  Mixing it with carrara marble or mother of pearl is lovely and softens it

We are seeing graphic tiles more and more and now continuing as a popular and easy to maintain product - back painted glass which makes for easy clean up on a backsplash or shower.

What's Out....

The ombre look has been overdone and is not being seen as much.

Chevron - only being used in small amounts not as much as previously done

Mirrored Furniture which is still popular to a point but in the more formal design spaces

Text as decor has been around a while and now is going away

2015 Interior Design Trends

2015 will be a year for bold colours, oversized canvases and eco-friendly designs. The home décor trends of the year will provide you the opportunity to express yourself through creativity, extravagance and versatility.

Let the bathroom makeover be your focus in 2015:

You can expect the bathroom to see the biggest changes out of any room in the house in 2015. Bathrooms will be moving toward a more clean and contemporary look. The National Kitchen and Bath Association’s style report says they won’t completely lose their cozy, rustic charm, but they will transition to a more minimalist modern vibe in the New Year. You can expect
 • Quartz countertops replacing granite.
• Soaking tubs replacing rain showers.
• Shades of grey replacing white walls.

Be inspired by these colour schemes for 2015:
• “Gray will be the hottest neutral of 2015 because it sets a great backdrop.” Jeff Andrews, LA Interior Designer.
• Paint your bedroom olive green, a warm and organic neutral. Use white or cream accents in the room.
• Bring in colours from the outdoors. Embrace the organic colours that feel right in your home.
• Use a colour from a frosted pastel on the bathroom walls and choose a colour from a bright palate for your vintage tub.
•Other areas:
• Try a combination of greens, plums, cerulean blue, beiges and whites in your living room. Don’t be afraid to throw in lots of pattern. 2015 Interior design trends 8 9 It’s important to create balance when selecting the colors in your home. Choose a colour palate you like and then use the more decorative, bold colours on the furniture and other accessories. Don’t be afraid to have fun with colours from different palates, you may be surprised what works together.

Other Trends to Watch For:
• Oversized paintings on canvases
• Eco-friendly materials
• Animal prints and textures will be popular on couches, pillows, chairs and more
• China dinnerware will be a must-have
• Stand alone mirror in the bedroom

• Accent features such as furniture or light fixtures that work both inside and outside will be popular

• Warm metal kitchen fixtures Remember to be bold, resourceful and imaginative, but most importantly, be you. If you see a piece of furniture that inspires you, buy it and build a room around it.
